Five European Union member states have unveiled plans for external migrant processing centers to manage asylum seekers. Denmark, Greece, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands have agreed to this significant initiative. They seek to establish these facilities beyond European borders by 2027.

Danish Migrations Minister Morten Bodskov hosted talks in Copenhagen recently. He expects a ‘common understanding’ with a non-EU partner country around the New Year. The specific nations for these ‘return hubs’ remain undisclosed; however, Uganda and Rwanda are frequently mentioned as potential locations.

Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris affirmed the ambitious goal. He stated the ‘return hub’ should be operational outside the EU by 2027. Meanwhile, Denmark announced its readiness to send rejected asylum seekers to such hubs by the end of 2027.

Minister Bodskov earlier stressed Denmark’s firm stance. He declared they would not ‘reward’ foreigners staying illegally due to return difficulties. Furthermore, the European Parliament approved tougher migration rules in June, granting broader detention powers, which facilitates the creation of such external migrant processing centers.

However, human rights groups have severely criticized the entire concept. Previous similar efforts have faced significant hurdles. For example, Britain abandoned its scheme to deport undocumented migrants to Rwanda. Similarly, Italian-run facilities in Albania have encountered legal challenges and slow implementation.
